Welcome to Rarebird Handmade!
Hi! My name is Courtney, I am the owner and artist behind Rarebird Handmade.Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, I come from a long line of artists, junk pickers, and antique dealers. I studied art, jewelry, and interior design and have a passion for painting and folk/outsider art. I love all things vintage, especially clothes, patterns, fabrics, quirky objects, and furniture. My love of vintage pieces inspired what is now known as Rarebird Handmade! Being able to combine my passion, as well as my love of vintage pieces, allowed me to find the perfect creative match combining the use of something old like vintage tins and making them into repurposed fashionable jewelry.
All jewelry is made from actual vintage tins, trays, and other found treasures. These beautiful decorative containers were once used for everything from tea, makeup, perfume, to biscuits and cookies. Tins are made all over the world! I treasure hunt for tins and things to use in my art anywhere and everywhere! From thrift shops, yard sales, and your granny’s basement! They often show up on my doorstep when someone is doing a clean out and I’m happy to give them new life. I search for the most special pieces to keep in my own collection.
I make each piece by hand in my home studio. I love the look of old and new mixed together, I love to mix vintage with more modern brass bits and vintage beads. I also love playing with patterns and mix-matching colors. You may find small dings or scratches that add to the uniqueness of the jewelry, as these are actual vintage scraps and were once used every day. The small batch zero waste designs are a beautiful example of upcycling something old and repurposing it to feel fresh fun and modern again! One of the most unique things about Rarebird Handmade is the fact that no two pieces are alike. I also make specialty pieces of jewelry and custom paintings, so if you have something in mind /a vision that you are looking for, please feel free to contact me .
